How Much Sushi per Person? Pieces per Roll and Order
Ordering sushi for a group — or trying to work out what you’ll actually get from a delivery-app listing? Here is how many pieces come in a typical order and how much to plan per person.
How many pieces are in an order?
| Menu item | Typical pieces |
|---|---|
| Thin roll (hosomaki: cucumber, tuna, avocado) | 6 |
| Standard / inside-out roll (California, spicy tuna) | 6–8 |
| Specialty roll (dragon, rainbow) | 8–10 |
| Hand roll (temaki) | 1 cone |
| Nigiri | 1 or 2 per order (check the menu) |
| Sashimi | Often 3–5 slices per order, varies widely |
These are typical counts, not rules. On delivery apps, look for the piece count in the item description; if it isn’t there, it is worth messaging or calling the restaurant before ordering for a group.
How much sushi per person?
A common rule of thumb for adults having sushi as the main meal:
- Light eater: about 1–2 rolls (roughly 8–12 pieces)
- Average appetite: about 2–3 rolls (roughly 12–18 pieces)
- Big appetite: 3 or more rolls, or add nigiri and sides
- With sides (miso soup, edamame, salad, gyoza): reduce by roughly a roll per person
Specialty rolls with tempura or lots of toppings are more filling than thin rolls; nigiri and sashimi are less filling per piece than rice-heavy rolls.
Ordering family-style for a group
- Mix raw and cooked options so everyone has something: e.g. California, shrimp tempura, eel or vegetable rolls alongside tuna and salmon.
- Party platters list a piece count — divide by the number of guests and use the guide above.
- Order a little less raw fish than you think you need; leftovers don’t keep (see storing leftover sushi).
- Ask for sauces on the side and extra soy sauce, wasabi and ginger for larger orders.
Timing a delivery
Schedule delivery close to when you will eat. Sushi shouldn’t sit at room temperature for more than two hours in total — see how long sushi can sit out. For more ordering tips read how to order sushi like a pro, then find sushi restaurants in your city.
